Parking the cars around the rear end of the abandoned boarding school, we made our way through the old building, and I guided Dove to the second floor, while her guards remained downstairs by the entrance, keeping watch.

“Um, is this a lab or a teenage, druggie hang out?” Dove asked, disgusted, when we walked through the decoy entrance to my lab.

Alfie laughed, making his way to the large fireplace wall. “That is not our secret lab. This is…” His hand pushed into the side of the marble fireplace and a puff of air fanned our faces while we waited. The wall swung open, revealing the passage to the space behind, and Dove’s eyes grew wide as saucers.

“This is so cool!” she screeched, holding both hands to her chest. Alfie and I chuckled, while Zoe gave her a murderous glance.

Zoe entered the lab first, and we followed, taking Dove with us. True wonder illuminated her face, her eyes wandering over the space and taking in every detail.

“This is our humble space, where the history of the world was rewritten by way of our discoveries,” Alfie announced with pride, and a hint of longing. “I once thought that our names would join the great researchers and historians on the pages of history books.” His hand slowly dragged over his lab table—he still had samples taken from our “guest”, which he’d been analyzing before we left. “I guess not.”

My chest constricted, and Zoe’s hurt gaze settled on me. “Yeah, thanks for ruining that, Matt.”

“It is not his fault,” Dove immediately defended. “Your work is indeed world changing. Unfortunately, my kind is not forgiving. They would destroy this world before allowing anyone to take away the positions and power they’ve acquired, through centuries and centuries of existence. Some would do whatever is necessary to make sure our race stays a secret. It is not worth your lives.”

“And what? We should believe you are helping us from the goodness of your cold, dead, heart?” Zoe challenged, glaring at her.

Dove’s hair swayed along her cheeks as she shook her head. “We are creatures of darkness, and I strongly believe that is where we must remain. But to answer your question, I have my own selfish reasons.”

Her eyes filled with dread when they reconnected with mine.

“There is a Vampir war coming, Mathew, and once it arrives, humanity will be caught in the middle. No one will be safe, and we are simply trying to stop it. Letting humans know we exist now, would only make it that much worse.”

A loud crash echoed outside, making us jump from the start, and Dove rushed to the window. Her panicked eyes flew to us. “She’s here, and she brought trackers. Grab only the most important things. We have to go!”

Her words sent Zoe and Alfie into a frantic motion, and they began to put what they’d been working on into the special insulated cases—they were air-and-water-tight, as well as crush proof. Hurriedly, they placed the test tubes, culture vessels and glass flasks into the protective foam, locking them and scrambling the combination locks on them.
